Jen, I love this quote. Thank you so much. I needed to read this today to defy expectation, to go off the rails, to do your own thing. And isn’t it always our own expectation that we need to override?
The conditioned idea injected over and over again from culture, etc.
A "true artistic voice" is the only voice I'm seeking at this point in my life as a writer. If validation and sales and all the other trappings of "success" come, that's a side benefit. If it doesn't, I'm okay with that. Thank you for this post and prompt, Jen.
That is so amazing, Nancy! I am glad to have role models who show that we can't control anything beyond ourselves; devotion to what and who we love is what matters.
This is such a true and thoughtful post. I really misunderstood the art of Yoko Ono for so long. I just knew of her as the one who broke up The Beatles. But through studying art more and more, I began to understand her as an artist and I admire what she strives for and how she stays true to her unique views and evolution. I think we should all listen to that within ourselves.
Thanks for reading, Sara! I would love to meet her for that reason - I feel like she was an easy target and endured so more than her fair share of scrutinty and yet never compromised. I aspire to this.
I, too, needed to hear this today. Making art, to me, is about the making. My hope in my heart is that it will connect with others in an uplifting way.

I have to shake it off so often, Prajna. Thanks for reading!!

Beautiful, Jen. Words and works to live by.

I am with you! There is nothing more beautiful than being in community with both art and artists.
“As most artists and writers know, however, when we listen to the work, something more powerful happens.” So true. Great post, Jen. Thank you.
